 Tradition: Welsh Warfare

A rugged land breeds rugged fighters well-versed in ancient arts of war. Light and lethal, Welsh armies flow like water through crags and valleys, ever fluid in strategy. Arrows and slingstones fall in a deadly torrent before foes can react. Strike and vanish back into the mist as swiftly as they came. The rocky peaks and sodden bogs nurture nimble forces using terrain and cunning to triumph against imposing odds. Trained since youth and bonded to the land, the Welsh wield their primeval highland kingdom as both sanctuary and weapon.

Light Footman & Skirmishers

Ysgubawyr Scouts (Skirmishers)

Like phantoms they sweep through dense wood and fog, the lightly armed Ysgubawyr exchanging information and scouting enemy positions using stealth and speed. Their motto: See all, remain unseen. They screen the army's advance and probe for weaknesses to exploit, striking fast before receding into the misty hills once more.

Archers & Crossbows

Saethwyr Archers (Archers)

Rain upon our foes a storm of arrows! The Saethwyr wield the mighty longbow with skill handed down through generations. Capable of punching through armor at range, their deadly projectiles darken the sky. From high vantage they stand, as volley after volley decimates all who would dare encroach on Wales.

Pikes, Javelins & Spears

Cadwgan Javelineers (Pikemen)

Raining death from afar, the Cadwgan hurl javelins with practiced precision. Lines bristling with their deadly darts, they soften foes for the main force's advance. Once their volleys fly, the Cadwgan withdraw, masking themselves in craggy cliffs to unleash another withering fusillade. None are safe from their reach.

Light Cavalry

Hobelwyr Horseman (Light Cavalry)

Riding hardy mountain horses, the lightly armored Hobelwyr swarm down misty slopes with javelin and sword to harass invaders. Dismounting to fight on foot, their mobility allows surprise strikes from the highlands before disappearing into the haze, only to reemerge elsewhere unexpected. Masters of hit-and-run warfare on home terrain.

Uchelwr Cavalry (Light Cavalry)

Like thunder across the plains, the Uchelwr Cavalry charges forth, a fearsome sight in gleaming armor. Mounted on noble steeds, they wield lances and swords, embodying courage and chivalry. With swift and precise maneuvers, they safeguard their realm, an indomitable force to be reckoned with.

Heavy & Armored Infantry

Byddin Infantry (Heavy Infantry)

Stout warriors form the backbone of Welsh armies. As Byddin foot soldiers, they march abreast with shields locked and speartips gleaming. Though lacking knightly status, their valor and discipline is unmatched. Come rain or shine, the doughty Byddin will hold the line or die trying. None shall trample Welsh earth uncontested!

Gwyr Traed Infantry (Heavy Infantry)

Armored in iron and outfitted in spear and shield, the Gwyr Traed march in lockstep — discipline their hallmark. Stalwart defenders of Wales, they contest every inch of earth. With shieldwall intact and banners flying high, these elite foot soldiers fear no foe. Glory awaits those who stand firm!

Heavy & Armored Cavalry

Teulu Cavalry (Heavy Cavalry)

From the noblest lineages the Teulu ride forth, their banners unfurled in the breeze. Clad in shining armor, they epitomize chivalry and honor. With lance and sword, they charge fearlessly into battle, defending their realm with unwavering loyalty and valour.

Marchogion Knights (Heavy Cavalry)

Noble Welsh warriors astride armored destriers, the Marchogion thunder into battle wielding lance and sword. Their mail hauberks gleam as they crash through enemy lines. Born to the saddle and bred for war, this chivalric order lives by the knightly code. With honor they fight for crown and country!

How It Works

• Play as a Welsh ruler (the tradition is built into the Welsh culture), or adopt the Welsh Warfare regional tradition on a compatible culture.
• The tradition unlocks all nine men-at-arms for recruitment, each with its own art, statistics and terrain bonuses.
• The roster spans every role — scouts, longbowmen, javelineers, light and heavy cavalry, and shieldwall infantry — built around mobility, missile power and defending home terrain.

Compatibility

• Updated for CK3 1.19.
• Adds new content and overrides the Welsh culture entry; compatible with most mods that do not rewrite the same culture.
• Safe to add to an ongoing save.
