Tradition: Breton Warfare
Where the land meets the wrathful sea, hardy Breton stock carves out rock-strewn dominion through grit and guile. Masters of woods and waves alike, swift ships sail forth to plunder while ghostly bands emerge from soggy marsh and forest to harass invaders. Though lacking the status of knights, the Breton common folk draw deep resilience from the craggy soil they defend. With stone fortresses guarding coasts yet unconquered, this tenacious people withstand the tides of time and tyranny through adaptability and cunning.
Adopting this regional tradition unlocks the full roster of nine Breton men-at-arms below.
The Roster
Light Footman & Skirmishers
Gwaztrou Warriors (Skirmishers)
Bearded berserkers sworn to sword and shield, the fearsome Gwaztrou roar ancient war cries as they surge forth. Spears and axes glisten, the tribal birthright of Breton freeman called once more unto battle. Let all who face them quiver before such unrestrained spirit from ageless stock!
Archers & Crossbows
Kenvrinn Hunters (Archers)
Nimble harassers raining missiles from afar, the Kenvrinn sow chaos and confusion amidst the foe's ranks. Darting unseen through bog and thicket, they strike hard then vanish like smoke. None can match their skill at frustrating enemies through guerrilla ambush.
Bersagier Crossbowmen (Archers)
With mechanical volleys, Bersagier bolts whiz death from afar, felling knight and steed alike. Foes charge heedlessly only to be pinned in place under their whistling steel rain. Glory to those marksmen who reap souls while safely distant!
Paotred-Breizh Archers (Archers)
Arrows whistling, the stalwart Paotred-Breizh take deadly aim upon invaders from afar. None are safe from the reach of their skill honed through lifelong familiarity with the bow. Praise these rugged marksmen who reap souls while safely distant!
Pikes, Javelins & Spears
Pedyt Infantry (Pikemen)
Arrayed shoulder to shoulder, the steadfast Pedyt advance as one with booming war cries. Weapon and shield gleaming, none can break these disciplined ranks of stout Breton infantry locked in grim purpose. Glory and valor to those who stand fast!
Light Cavalry
Marcheger Horseman (Light Cavalry)
Swooping from the mist like tireless hawks, Marcheger horsemen harry invaders through guerrilla stings and feints. None can match their skill riding the rugged land, appearing suddenly to strike then vanish like the coastal fog. Glory to Breton horse!
Heavy & Armored Infantry
Maen Startijenn Elite (Heavy Infantry)
Shields locked and blades gleaming, the stalwart Maen Startijenn advance as one. Sworn unto death to their lords, none can break these disciplined ranks of champions and shock troops. Glory to those who defend their chief and brethren!
Heavy & Armored Cavalry
Buanded Cavalry (Heavy Cavalry)
Hooves thunder as lances lowered, the mighty Buanded crash into enemies to scatter their ranks. Glory and victory to these mailed horsemen, the knightly pride of ancient Breton stock! All shall tremble and flee before their thundering charge.
Ridire Knights (Heavy Cavalry)
Hooves pounding, the iron-clad Ridire bear down upon enemies with lance lowered. None can withstand the crushing charge of these champions of Breton chivalry! Their foes scatter like leaves before autumn winds, helpless against such knightly might. Glory to the Ridire!
How It Works
- Play as a Breton ruler (the tradition is built into the Breton culture), or adopt the Breton Warfare regional tradition on a compatible culture.
- The tradition unlocks all nine men-at-arms for recruitment, each with its own art, statistics and terrain bonuses.
- The roster leans into Breton strengths — skirmishers, three ranged options including crossbows, mobile cavalry and disciplined infantry — built around woods, coasts and hit-and-run defense of home terrain.
Compatibility
- Updated for CK3 1.19.
- Adds new content and overrides the Breton culture entry; compatible with most mods that do not rewrite the same culture.
- Safe to add to an ongoing save.
